In 1870 the first settlers moved to the Tempe area, south of the Salt River and east of Phoenix. They helped to build irrigation canals to service small farms to the east and west of the Tempe Butte. Another settlement was developed west of the Tempe Butte and this community became the trade center for the south side of the Salt River Valley. As both settlements grew they became one and in 1879 the town Tempe was formed. In 1885 the Arizona legislature chose Tempe as the site for the Territorial Normal School, which is now know as Arizona State University. Through most of its history Tempe has been a small agricultural community but after World War II Tempe has grown into a modern city. Tempe is now known as the home to the Fiesta Bowl and the Arizona Cardinals. It is the seventh largest city in Arizona, with a strong modern economy structured on commerce, tourism, and electronics manufacturing.

Another historical site in Tempe would be the Southern Pacific Depot Museum.  The Tempe Depot was the third station built in Tempe. The Maricopa and Phoenix station at Fifth Street was demolished in 1917. In 1908, the Phoenix and Eastern Depot was moved to West Third Street and remodeled. In May of 1910, the Maricopa and Phoenix Railroad Company was merged with the new Arizona Eastern Railroad Company.  The former companys station was used until the present station was constructed in 1924. This location became part of the Southern Pacific Main Line in 1925. The Tempe Depot is significant as the only remaining depot associated with the various railroads that had a major influence on the development of Tempe.
