Dr. Alexander John Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon for the Arizona Territory, in 1891 bought 80 acres of land south of Mesa in the Salt River Valley.  Once he was situated he then began to draw up a map of the town and advertised the sale of Chandler Ranch sites.  On May 17th, 1912 Dr. Chandler opened the Town-site office which then became the center of downtown Chandler Arizona.  Chandler started with three wooden shacks, the town-site office, a dining hall, and a grocery store, in addition to the future site for the famous San Marcos Hotel.  A year later businesses began flourishing including the Bank of Chandler and the Eastern Railroad Depot, also known as the Arizona Railway.  In the center of downtown a park was built.  The grand opening of the Hotel San Marcos occured on November 22nd, 1913.  The hotel was a great success with many wealthy visitors who traveled to Chandler to stay there each winter.  Chandler had more than 1,000 resident by 1920 and finally in May the citizens voted to incorporate and become the Town of Chandler.  Dr. Chandler was the towns first mayor.  In 1950 Dr. Chandler passed away but thanks to him the Town of Chandler had grown to 3,800 residents and on May 24th, 1954 Chandler was upgraded to a city.  Now, in 2004 the population of Chandler is  nearly 120,000 people and Chandler has grown into a historic city.
